WATER AND PLACES
PLACEMAKING STUDIO

BE UNSW with PlaceAgency, Randwick City Council
Kingsford NSW 2032, June-August 2020

The study area proposed for this tactical urbanism project is located along the Anzac Parade corridor in Kensington and Kingsford, 6km from the Sydney CBD.

Council initiated and completed a Planning Strategy for the two town centres in response to considerable redevelopment pressure arising from the planned construction of the CBD to South east Light rail network and need for a new innovative planning approach that aligns infrastructure provision with urban transformation. The Strategy provides a detailed and comprehensive place-based analysis of the two centres, identifying pertinent planning issues, urban design and public domain challenges and strategic directions to guide sustainable growth of the two centres. The Strategy was endorsed by Council in December 2019 and is available at https://www.yoursay.randwick.nsw.gov.au/k2k.

This studio is run as an intensive studio with 2 full days of contact hours throught 7 weeks. The students will be immersed in the community having an opportunity to take all lessons at the Community Hub allowing the students to experience the area in depth. The studio is open to all built environment disciplines with assessment strategies adapted to allow skill development and evaluation based on their future role as placemakers.

Students will work collaboratively in small groups to plan, design and implement strategies for community engagement. Then, their designs will reflect and respond to the community perceptions gathered during this engagement. Each group will be expected to manage their budget, safety and policies of the Newport area.

It is expected that students enrolling into this studio will be able to develop the following placemaking skills:
How does this studio match PlaceAgency Objectives?
• Enabling students to experiment placemaking and tactical urbanism techniques and tools in practice with the support and guidance of studio leaders from the landscape/urban design professions.
• Enabling students to design and implement a community event, a temporary urban space installation and/or an urban performance.
